Westmark Leads Dyslexia Simulation for LA Public Library
LA’s iconic Central Library was the setting for Westmark School’s latest presentation of "Inside the Dyslexic Brain: An Experience Dyslexia™ Simulation." At the historic downtown venue, more than 120 librarians serving children and young adults citywide took part in the eye-opening workshop.
The opportunity arose after Stacy Lieberman, President and CEO of the Library Foundation of Los Angeles (LFLA), and Kadie Seitz, a Youth Services Librarian for the Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL), participated in simulations held on the Westmark campus last year. Their experience prompted them to propose that the simulation be conducted for librarians who work with young patrons, especially those struggling to learn to read.
With the support of Phoebe Guiot, Associate Director of LAPL’s Youth Services Department, the simulations were conducted in early February at two LAPL staff meetings: one for Young Adult Librarians, who serve youth ages 11–18, and one for Children’s Librarians, who serve kids under age 11. In fulfillment of Westmark’s mission and vision to raise public awareness and reshape perceptions of language-processing challenges like dyslexia, the outreach program connected Westmark to the LAPL as our partners in literacy.

Librarians from LAPL's seventy-two branches gathered to learn more about dyslexia.

Led by Westmark administrators and faculty, the six-station simulation took place at downtown LA's Central Library
We are grateful to the LAPL and the LFLA for the invitation! We hope that the six-station Experience Dyslexia™workshop—designed by our friends at the International Dyslexia Association–Northern California—will deepen the librarians’ understanding of dyslexia and foster compassion and empathy for the up to one in five Angelenos who think and learn differently.
The program “Inside the Dyslexic Brain: An Experience Dyslexia™ Simulation”” is open to Westmark parents and guardians, faculty and staff, and invited guests; read more about the experience. If you are a prospective applicant or an educational professional who works with youth and are interested in attending future presentations of this program, complete the form to join our e-list.
