A Spirited Spring in Sports

A Spirited Spring in Sports
Westmark Staff

Westmark Athletics wrapped up 2024–2025 with strong performances in the pool, on the pitch, and on the links.

Craig Schoof, Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Wellness, reports, "Over the course of the year, 59% of Westmark students participated in the Athletics program, with 29% competing in multiple sports. The Lions captured a league championship in Grades 5–6 Flag Football and two Liberty League titles in Swimming, and eleven student-athletes earned All-League honors!" Check out Mr. Schoof's full recap of the spring season that closed out the year.

Golf

This spring, the Upper School Golf team worked to clinch their third consecutive Omega League title and their fourth in the last five years. But after an undefeated regular season, they came up just four strokes short in the league championship match. Led by three-time 1st Team All-League honoree Jack F. and 2nd Team selections Lee H. and Leo T, the team battled until the end. Though they couldn’t get the crucial putts to fall this time around, with only one senior graduating, the Lions are well-positioned to reclaim the championship next season!

Swimming

Lark S.—our one-woman Swimming team—had a remarkable season, leading the “team” to a 24th-place finish out of 175 teams in the CIFSS Division 4. After winning Liberty League titles in both the 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke, she advanced to the championship finals in both events in the CIF finals and finished fourth in the 200 IM and seventh in the 100 Breaststroke.

Looking ahead to competing as a collegiate athlete, Lark signed with Hobart and William Smith Colleges and will take her talents to the next level in the fall. Go, Lark!

Soccer

In Middle School Soccer, the defending league champions had a tough act to follow. Our Grades 7–8 players gave it everything they had and showed marked improvement. But Spring Break and the Grade 8 Boston Trip meant that they had more games than practices, making it difficult to develop their skills to their full potential. Despite these obstacles, the stellar play of Sofia Z., Sofie G., and Sophia L., along with excellent contributions from Maren H., Izzy G., Karma K., and Paige S., has everyone looking forward to next season

Meanwhile, our fifth and sixth grade Soccer team competed in a very tough league and had a successful season, finishing strong by winning two of their final three matches and demonstrating great improvement over the course of the season and the ability to battle to the end of every contest. The front line was led by Tyler C. and Roman D., the midfield dominated by Jackson C., Apollo R., and Mason B., and the backline bolstered by Mila L., Bree B., and absolutely stellar goalie play from Sosie M. and Will C.

Equestrian

We do have one sport that goes all year round, and that is Equestrian. Riding under the Westmark name, Sydney F. displayed tremendous grit and dedication as her horse went lame last fall.  Despite that hurdle, Sydney secured three top-five finishes, along with three 1st -place and two 2nd place finishes, ending the year as the High Point Arabian Horse winner in Dressage at the Southern California Equestrian Center!
