Theater Arts
Westmark School offers a comprehensive and highly popular Theater Arts program starting in Grade 6*. Each school year is enriched by three theatrical productions: the Upper School Play in the fall, the Middle School Play in the winter, and the Spring Musical, which brings Grades 6–12 students together, both on stage and behind the scenes. Live musical accompaniment often elevates the experience.
For the annual plays, students either audition for acting roles or interview to form the technical crew. The young actors learn and refine their skills through monologue exercises, scene work, ensemble building, physical movement, and often puppetry. For the musical, they fine-tune their singing, articulation and diction, projection, and more. The tech crew takes on the full scope of duties to stage a production, including costume design, prop handling, hair and make-up, light and sound board operation, and stage management. Bravo!
In fulfillment of the one-year arts requirement in Upper School, Grade 9 students are invited to take Introduction to Theater to deepen their appreciation and understanding of the art form. Upper-grade electives build upon this foundational knowledge and prepare interested students for college-level or professional auditions.
*In 2023–2024, Westmark piloted Musical Theater for Lower School. This new "special" has familiarized students with the robust theater program that awaits them in Middle and Upper School. Future plans about this pilot program TBA.
