Math

Math

Middle School Math Skills
(For students entering grades 6 – 8)
In small groups of three to five students, this class focuses on meeting individual needs. Topics covered include basic middle school math skills such as problem solving, working with fractions, and solving algebraic equations.

Two-hour course:
(8:00 - 10:15 a.m.)

Upper School Math Skills
(For students entering grades 9 – 12)
This class covers upper level math skills including problem solving with fractions and integers, solving algebraic equations, and developing familiarity with geometric concepts. In small groups of three to five, instructors work with students to meet individual needs.

Active Learning

ACTIVE LEARNING

Spanish Language and Culture
(For students entering grades 6 – 8)
This class will offer students an immersion in the sights, sounds, tastes and experiences of the Spanish-speaking world. We will make tasty comida, sing fantastic typical canciones, watch Spanish speaking películas, and learn the culture from different Spanish-speaking countries.

Robotics
(For students entering grades 3 – 6)
Grouped by age-level, students explore robotics through hands–on experience developing critical computer, engineering, scientific, mathematical and analytical skills. Students in this course use industry-standard software and realistic models.

Summer Art Fun!
(For students entering grades 2 – 5)
Through hands-on fun, students will explore a new art media each week. When we have completed our explorations, students will create an original piece of artwork incorporating one or more of the materials we’ve explored.

Studio Explorations
(For students entering grades 6-12)
This class combines direct instruction about techniques and use of new media with plenty of student directed open studio time. Each week, a new media and several techniques for using the media will be introduced. Students will then explore a media of their choosing in a variety of ways, or create an original work using the media of their choosing.

Intro to Performing Arts
(For students entering grades 2 - 5)
This immersion class allows students to explore different facets of performing arts, including acting, theatre design, music, and dance. Each week, we will highlight a different aspect of each performing arts discipline.

READING & WRITING

Active Reading and Writing Strategies
(For students entering grades 6 –12)
Designed to improve reading comprehension and text analysis skills, this class will teach students how to use graphic organizers and effective annotating, summarizing, and paraphrasing skills. In addition, students will develop comprehensive writing skills – honing key sentence, paragraph and essay writing strategies. This class incorporates the University of Kansas Learning Strategies Curriculum and Jane Schaffer writing methods will be incorporated into the class.

Sentence Writing Intensive Program
(For students entering grades 8-12)
Based on the highly regarded University of Kansas Sentence Writing Program, this class provides 8th grade and upper school students with intensive, hands-on learning about basic sentence structure. The Sentence Writing Program systematically leads students from the identification of sentence parts and the writing of simple sentences, to the building of compound and complex structures.

Handwriting
(For students entering grades 2 –8)
For many students, the physical act of handwriting can be challenging, laborious and stand in the way of their ability to express their thoughts and ideas. In this class, students will be assessed to determine their current handwriting level and then instructed using the research based Handwriting Without Tears® curriculum. The Handwriting Without Tears® program makes use of multisensory teaching style to reach students with varying learning styles.

Keyboarding
(For students entering grades 2 –8)
Proficiency in typing has rapidly become a critical skill for the 21st century student as well as a necessity for students needing the support of assistive technology.
Building on the research based Handwriting Without Tears® program, this class will make use of Keyboarding Without Tears® program to provide students with the instruction necessary to develop touch typing, fluency and accuracy skills.

Westmark’s Summer S.M.A.R.T.S. program offers daily one-to-one tutorials uniquely tailored to individual student needs.

All tutorials are a one teacher to one student ratio.
We offer Summer SMARTS tutorials in the following areas:

Reading Tutorials
Our renowned Summer SMARTS Reading Program offers one-to-one tutorials with reading specialists trained in the Lindamood-Bell programs Seeing Stars© and Visualizing and Verbalizing©. Each tutorial is one hour and can be combined with additional reading tutorials, individualized tutorials or classes.

All students enrolling in summer school reading tutorials must undergo a comprehensive assessment of their specific reading skills. The assessment fee is $250.00 and includes a detailed reading assessment, a 30-minute meeting with our Reading Program Consultant and a summary report of scores and reading profile.

Getting Ready for Upper School
(For all students entering all grade levels, of
Westmark Upper School)

High School Readiness – Developing Literacy Skills
In this class, students will further develop close reading and writing skills through annotation, discussion, and expository and response to literature writing. By reading fiction and non-fiction texts both in class and at home for assignments, students will practice independent learning strategies in preparation for high school. Students will also be given strategies to support executive functioning and improve competency with assistive technologies such as Learning Ally and Dragon Dictate.


Two-hour course:

Payment Information

Payment, Cancellation, Refund, & Missed Class Policy

PAYMENT:
Payment in full is required upon registration. All Tuition fees include a $50 non-refundable administrative fee.

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS:
Cancellation requests on pre-paid registration and made at least one full week prior to class start date (before June 27, 2016), will be given a refund (less the $50 administrative fee). Cancellation requests within one week of class start date (June 27-July 1) will receive a 50% refund (less the $50 administrative fee). Tuition fees are refundable only if application for enrollment is denied. Once the program begins, as of June 27, no refunds will be given. Please note that due to the nature of a short summer schedule, there are no refunds or make-up classes offered for missed classes.

ADEQUATE ENROLLMENT POLICY:
Classes are subject to adequate enrollment. If a class has to be canceled due to lack of registrants, you will be contacted for a second choice or given a refund for that class.

REGISTRATION: Registration is completed when we receive this form, the required fees and your signature below.
