Academic Dean

At Westmark we use the principles of Dr. Mel Levine's Schools Attuned to approach each student as an individual with a unique profile of learning strengths and needs. Currently 13 teachers are trained in Schools Attuned in addition to holding special education credentials.

The Academic Dean works with teachers and Grade Level Advisors to make necessary modifications in the curriculum content and delivery and to design individual plans as needed when students are experiencing specific challenges.

Students are welcome to visit the Academic Dean's office if they have questions or concerns about a specific class, teacher, assignment or general work load. Many students have difficulties managing all their papers, assignments, homework, and due dates and can sign up for or be referred to the Organizational Clinic. At the Organizational Clinic, students are individually guided to organize their notebook and materials following the "Westmark Organization System" or develop a plan for more effective time management.

Grade Level Advisors

Every student is assigned a Grade Level Advisor to oversee his/her academic program. Grade Level Advisors communicate with students, parents and teachers and formulate plans of actions as needed to address academic challenges and overall progress, such as homework management or ways to improve comprehension.

Advisors are involved in the process of demystifying students about their learning issues using the Schools Attuned process. In addition, advisors communicate with teachers about students' learning strengths and weakness and help students choose classes and sometimes outside activities that would best suit their strengths. Assisting students attain a clearer picture of where they will thrive after leaving Westmark is another facet of Grade Level Advisor support.
